Concord Casita

Customizing a cabin to the client’s needs.

The Assignment: Students in an architecture class were randomly assigned each other as prospective clients. The task was to design a cabin in a new, affordable-living development in Boulder, Colorado, customizing the cabin to meet the client’s particular needs.

The Design: The Concord Casita draws on a kit of parts to maximize sunlight at all times of day while creating a sense of private space. Although the cabin is only 500 sq/ft, building a second story created a division and balance of different space types. This allows for the flexibility needed to meet the client’s needs — a place where indoor/outdoor hosting is possible but also a place with warm, natural materials for rest and relaxation.
