The
Murphy Desk
Multiple workstations, minimal space.
The Problem: Within the classroom, teachers need flexibility to use their spaces efficiently. However, most modern classrooms have limited storage for different kinds of furnishings. Additionally, children are different sizes and heights, and teachers are trying to create spaces that allow children to tailor their environment to their needs.
The Solution: The murphy desk is a low-footprint, adjustable workstation for group or individual study. Designed to attach to the wall, it allows spaces that are underutilized within the school, such as hallways, to be transformed into study space. Each panel locks in place at an open or closed position, and the desk surface can be removed and adjusted by each individual student. Rounded corners and lightweight materials make it so kids can be the masters of their own domains.
Skills/notes: rapid prototyping in physical models (paper, particleboard); Digital modeling in Rhino 3D; Final model is made with MDF, metal, and felt.
